As an immigrant I won’t fly the flag

Flags shouldn't divide us

Imagine the scene (which I am I very pleased to say will never happen in Spain), a sea of Spanish flags all over the main high streets in a stand against immigration. How would we feel? Because at the end of the day I consider myself an immigrant. I have come to live and work in another country. Imagine if you turned on Spanish news on TV and and you saw a group of people stating that there are too many foreigners in Spain. Wouldn’t exactly make you feel welcome, would it?

Perhaps, I am pushing the point too far but after watching the scenes in Britain and elsewhere I feel that someone should stand up for us or me, the immigrant. I would say that most Britons are proud of their country and their flag but don’t like it being used as a tool against immigration by a handful of people who have a hidden mandate.

I still maintain that Britain is a tolerant nation, where the words freedom and fair play are not used lightly. Yes, Britain does have its faults but I am still proud to say I am British even though I am an immigrant in another country.

Fly your flags on the King’s birthday on VE or VJ day or when there is a special moment that made you feel proud but don’t fly the flag against immigration - well at least not in my name.
