You can’t take tourists for granted

This year the myth that German tourists would always come to Mallorca on holiday has been broken once and for all

Who do you believe? The mixed bag of reports and figures about the holiday season this year have everyone confused. Perhaps that is the point, but it is an exceptionally cloudy picture. What is evident is there hasn’t been a massive no-show of tourists as some foreign newspaper outlets suggest, but tourism is down.

German tourism has fallen this year but this was to be expected after many years of growth. The price of holidays has been blamed, which might suggest that the decision by hoteliers to raise their prices was not such a great idea. Of course, the islands did want fewer tourists to ease the alleged overcrowding, so why are some sectors complaining? You can’t have your cake and eat it.

What will worry the local authorities is the fall in German tourism. There was a school of thought that suggested that the Germans would always come to Mallorca, whatever the price. Wrong. All parties are going to have a difficult job trying to put a positive spin on a season which hasn’t been as good as everyone expected.

The biggest losers this year appear to be restaurant and bar owners. As holidays are more expensive, then tourists have less to spend on going out. Perhaps summer' 2025 can be labelled as a learning curve - you can't take tourists for granted even if you are Mallorca.
