Silence is golden from the tourist industry

Could the pressures of anti-tourism protests and rising prices signal a turning point?

A good or bad summer season? To be honest I don’t know because there is a veil of silence from the interested parties and no-one is putting their head above the parapet. According to the hoteliers we will have to wait until September for official occupancy figures ... this is rather odd because only this week bar and restaurant owners were saying that their season had improved in July. If they know what is going on in July surely the hoteliers must know as well? But officially No.

You can safely say that if the figures were good then they would be announced at once. The silence is rather ominous. The new political line is that it is too early to say. I believe that it is a rather average season but no-one can say this because it rather destroys talk of a record season at the start of the summer. There are other issues as well. The anti-tourism protests have had an impact, but once again silence from the local authorities.

The fact that hoteliers have raised their prices is another issue. If it is confirmed that the season was not as good as everyone expected, I can see the local authorities rushing to brush the news under the carpet or even saying that this is what they wanted in the first place with fewer visitors to ease the so-called tourism saturation. And yet for now there is silence. Who will dare to speak up first?
