A lot is said about the local tourist industry but one of the unsung heroes of the Balearic economy is the nautical industry. Every year it contributes heavily to the local economy and employs thousands of people of all nationalities. Indeed, Palma will soon become one of the top yacht repair centres in the Mediterranean, being able to cater for everything from a superyacht to a typical Majorcan fishing boat.
The nautical industry should be rather proud of itself really. It brings together all nationalities under one flag, who share one common bond, their love of the island and the sea. Today, the Palma Boat Show will get under way and this has become the flagship of the nautical industry. Walking around the fair yesterday, I would say that the majority of the big yachting companies are represented, underlining the importance of Palma to the nautical industry. Palma hotels are packed with people who have flown in especially for the fair and all that is needed is what Majorca is famous for, good weather.
The local authorities do try and help the industry through promotion but perhaps they could do more especially as the industry is so important for the local economy. But today is a day to celebrate as the Boat Show gets under way and we are moving in the right direction. A new season beckons and present forecasts point to a good one. The nautical industry will continue to prosper but its important economic role should be remembered by all.
