It may have been a long winter and Easter was early this year, but I still get the impression that Majorca is not really open for the start of the season. You get the impression that it is a question of work in progress with many projects still to be completed. I was quite amazed to see in Puerto Pollensa that the beach beds and sun umbrellas were not out, and there was a feeling of things being rather quiet at the majority of places I visited over the Easter holidays.
This year it is a case of wait and see about the holiday season. No one is too sure how the season is going to evolve. There are concerns about Turkey and resorts in north Africa, and judging by what I saw over Easter, Majorca should be concerned.
I am sure that over the next few weeks someone will roll out some statistics which claim that it has been the best Easter ever, but I wouldn't be convinced. I believe that Majorca should be on its guard, watching prices and making sure that tourist tax cash is being diverted to the resorts. The good old days when the island was a safe haven destination are well and truly over. There is plenty of competition and in many cases competitors are cheaper.
The island will get millions of tourists during the peak summer months, but I doubt that it is going to be a record-breaking summer. The truth of the matter is that the last few years have been excellent and now we can expect average seasons.
