Like many of us I was under the impression that little or nothing would change for us when Britain finally leaves the European Union. I thought that a deal would be quickly signed with the EU which would mean that British citizens living in Spain and Spaniards living in Britain would have the same rights as they enjoy at the moment.
But the word visa has crept into the discussion - not your famous flexible friend but the travel document. Britain is planning to allow citizens from European Union countries to visit Britain without a visa but they will require one if they want to work or study there. Well, this has to be a reciprocal agreement.
Now, if the European Union requires all visiting British citizens to get a visa, then the alarm bells are going to start ringing. British tourists will need a visa to go to Spain: bad news indeed. Britain should ensure that we have the same rights as we have at the moment - change can be very damaging.
