For once I agree with UKIP. "We’ve seen a reduction in the number of police officers, we’ve seen a reduction in the amount of money the security service has been getting, we’ve seen a reduction in the number of our armed forces," leader Paul Nuttall said. "It’s time for a rethink now." And of course he is right. Spending on defence and the security services needs to be increased at the expense of the 12 billion pound international aid budget. Britain spends just two per cent of GDP on defence, the bare minimum according to Donald Trump.
If it wasn't so serious it would be laughable; the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace has been cancelled because armed police officers have been diverted to other jobs. The security services are unable to keep a close watch on all known suspects because they simply do not have the necessary resources. I sincerely hope that security and defence becomes a key issue in the election campaign. The defence budget has been slashed over the last decade and the money spent on policies which at best could be described as luxuries. The first job of the government is to keep people safe and the only way Britain can fight terrorism is to give the security services and the armed forces everything they need. Defence is as important as health or education especially in light of the recent terror attacks. The government needs to start spending.
