Praise for public transport

|

Amongst the many things Majorca can be proud of, one of them is the public transport system, but it rarely gets the praise that is deserved.

The railway service is reliable, cheap and quick, although the railway company is having a few problems with a staff shortage at the moment and has had to reduce services. But that will soon be solved and there are plans to extend the network further in to the north of the island.

Then there is the TIB bus service which I used last Saturday to get to Puerto Alcudia. Again, not only was the service on time, the bus was new, comfortable and just ten euros 70 cents return. What is more, I alighted right outside my destination less than an hour of leaving Palma.

Right, a taxi would have got me there slightly quicker but would have cost me a small fortune. And it was interesting to see that at least half of the passengers on the full coach were holidaymakers of various origins who were using the service to get to Alcudia.

So, yes, I can see why the taxi associations are opposed to the local government’s plans to introduce direct TIB bus services from the airport to the key resorts. But it would appear that a growing number of passengers are getting wise to the island’s excellent public transport system.
