Britain cannot stand alone

|

We are living in difficult times: a terrorist outrage in France, an attempted coup in Turkey and the fallout from Britain's decision to leave the European Union. All this in the space of a week. Now is the time for unity: unity in the Western world to fight common problems.

I think the British government should make it very clear that it is still committed to the same foreign policy goals even though it has split away from its European allies: the fight against Islamic State, the need for stability across the region and a clear resolve against terrorism. The British government was right to say that Britain stands shoulder to shoulder with France and at the same time it was right to back the democratically elected government of Turkey.

Britain may find that it is hugely committed to unravelling its membership of the EU, but at the same time it also has a vital role to play on the world stage. Britain may want to be alone but it also has other commitments.
