Britain's uncertain future

|

So the issue of Britain in Europe is finally settled. Britain now stands alone and some would say with a bright future. Others will say that yesterday it effectively committed economic suicide which will lead to the break-up of the United Kingdom. To say that I was rather shaken by yesterday's decision is an understatement. I was basically speechless. I still can't understand why millions of people voted for economic uncertainty just when we have recovered from a horrible recession.

Don't get me wrong: I am all in favour of brave decisions and I am more than prepared to suffer the consequences. If the fight is worth fighting. But this fight was about immigration and giving Britain's political establishment a bloody nose. So what is Britain looking at? Two years of political uncertainty and probably votes for a breakaway in both Northern Ireland and Scotland. Also, a new prime minister is needed. All this in the space of 24 hours. Amazing.

Nigel Farage, the leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party says that yesterday should be celebrated as Britain´s Independence Day. I would say that it was a day when Britain gambled with its economic future and livelihood of future generations. And for what? A country which has an economy built around the service sector which has little or no industrial base. In fact, the limited industrial base is mostly foreign owned. Yes it was a good day for democracy but the consequences are enormous.
