There is a new danger on the high street, so beware. Skateboarders have taken to the pavements and it is pretty dangerous stuff. I have seen numerous shoppers coming close to almost certain injury by this small band of irresponsible skaters. And we are not talking teenagers.
The other night I was walking down the Jaime III in central Palma and two skateboarders were trying to get through scores of shoppers. One bar owner told them that they were rather old to be using skateboards on a busy shopping street, and he was not wrong. The local police should intervene before someone gets hurt. The city council spent large sums of money building cycle tracks across the city but it is quite amazing how how many bikers, skateboarders and even rollerbladers you will find using the pavement on busy streets. Surely the whole point of these tracks was to keep our pedal and foot-powered friends off the pavements?
The local authorities are right to crack down in the resorts but they should also be on the lookout in central Palma as well. I would say that a complete ban is needed on busy pavements of cyclists and skaters. A few years ago the city council introduced a whole range of measures which were meant to control anti-social behaviour. It is shame that these laws are not being enforced. Palma, thankfully, is now full of tourists and of course it is a busy place as well. The police need to act against this new form of menace.
