More tourism for Majorca, not less

|

We are heading for a record summer season which will mean that tourists will spend millions while on holiday here. Yes, it could be said that Palma is overcrowded during peak days when there are a large number of cruise ships in port and of course the day-to-day routine of some people is disrupted as a direct result during the summer months. This state of affairs has led to a small, and I say small, backlash against tourists which has resulted in anti-tourist graffiti being sprayed on some walls in the old part of the city.

It must be remembered, though, that without tourism this island would not survive. I would say that all jobs on the island are tourism related. The fact that millions of tourists are coming to these shores is great news. Picture this island if there was a sudden fall in tourism. We would all suffer. This year, thankfully, there will be more tourists than ever before because of the problems which are being experienced by some competing resorts. It could be said that it is an unusual situation which will not last. So the Balearics has a golden opportunity to shine. All tourists should be made welcome. There is no place for anti-tourist graffiti. This is just a senseless act by some people who should know better.

We enjoy a fantastic quality of life on this island thanks to the revenue from tourism. So rather than calling for fewer tourists we should call for more. The more tourists the better and it is as simple as that.
