It took Palma city council a month to remove anti-tourism graffiti from some walls in the old part of Palma. This is a disgrace. It should have been removed at once because Palma is a tourist city and without tourists it is nothing.
We are only talking about a small bit of graffiti in a few streets, so the alarm bells do not need to start ringing. But the local authorities should act at once to remove anything which could make tourists feel that they are not wanted. I still believe that the council should re-introduce their promotion campaign - A Tourist, A Friend. It was first introduced back in the early 1990s and it obviously sends out the right message.
At a time when Palma is crowded with tourists from the cruise ships, as well as of course the resorts, it strikes just the right message. The simple fact is that Majorca revolves around tourism. Shops depend on cash from holidaymakers both in Palma and in the tourist resorts. I would say that the majority of jobs depend on tourism. Tourism needs to be protected.
