Compared to the rest of society, we earn a ridiculous amount. It’s unfathomable," Mata said in an interview on Spanish television programme Salvados, broadcast on Sunday. "With respect to the world of football, I earn a normal wage. But compared to 99.9 per cent of Spain and the rest of the world, I earn a silly amount." Wise words from the Spaniard and of course he is not wrong. Footballers earn an incredible sum of money but little or nothing is said. If a banker gets a big fat bonus, there is an outcry. But a footballer can easily earn 150,000 euros a week, far more than the best-paid surgeon, doctor or even professor in the world. Now, I am not saying that footballers shouldn't be rewarded for their work; but a fair reward. I do believe that the wages of footballers should be capped or they should be forced to give a percentage of their wages to charity. Take Mata, he earns thousands of pounds a week. You can safely say that a sizeable part of Manchester would be happy receiving Mata's weekly wage once a year. "I’d take a pay cut if there was less business involvement in the sport. At this level, we're very well paid and sometimes you start thinking there isn't much of a difference between x and x+3," said Mata. Wise words indeed. If only more players thought like him.
