An ally in Spain

|

The Spanish anti-austerity left-wing party, Podemos, have a new ally. Podemos, who have sent shockwaves through the Spanish establishment, have welcomed the appointment of new Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn. Podemos leader, Pablo Iglesias, tweeted: "Corbyn’s victory as leader of the Labour party is great news, it’s a step forward towards a change in Europe for the benefit of the people.”  Iglesias, who at one stage was tipped as a future prime minister, is a controversial but popular figure. His party took thousands of votes in the last regional elections in the Balearics and have 10 members of the local parliament. He is no friend of the Spanish Socialist Party even though Podemos have joined socialist-led coalitions in many parts of the country, including the Balearics. You would have thought that Labour would be the equivalent of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE), but not any more. Their leader is closer to a party which has been shunned by the more moderate left-wing parties.
