With a pint of beer costing just £1.50, Bulgaria and its beach resorts are becoming increasingly popular - so much so Bulgaria, often referred to as the “new Mallorca,” where travellers can enjoy pristine Black Sea beaches, dramatic alpine mountains, and incredible savings. According to the Which? “The 10 cheapest package holiday destinations in Europe for summer 2026” survey, none of the Balearic islands made the top ten.
For example, Palma’s beachgoers are set to face sharply higher costs as sunbed and umbrella prices rise substantially from 2026. Daily rates for both items will increase to 10 euros, up from 6 euros in 2019, marking a 66 per cent jump. The revised tariffs form part of a newly launched tender for seasonal beach services issued by Palma Council, which sets out updated charges that will apply once new concession holders are appointed.
According to the council’s economic study, all beach services will become more expensive than they were before the pandemic. Premium loungers will climb from 30 to 45 euros per day, while Balinese beds will soar from 45 to 70 euros – increases of 50 and 55 per cent respectively. One of the few items to avoid a rise is the foldable canvas parasol, which remains at 30 euros. However, safe deposit boxes will now cost 5 euros, a fivefold increase from the previous 1 euro fee.
And flights from the UK to Bulgaria start as low as £13 one-way. This makes it easy for British tourists to get to Bulgaria for a long weekend or a week-long holiday without the hefty price tag that often comes with other European beach destinations. Whether it’s enjoying a casual drink on the beach or indulging in a full meal at one of the local restaurants, Bulgaria offers a remarkable value-for-money experience. From street food to high-end dining, Bulgaria’s rich culinary scene is sure to satisfy all tastes, all without the expensive price tag you might find in more touristy destinations like Mallorca.
Created in 1958 as a weekend getaway for Bulgarian families, Sunny Beach has become the largest tourist and vacation spot in the country. Today, the area contributes a significant part of the province’s annual gross domestic product. Initially a small beachside resort, it has grown to include a large variety of recreational activities and services, gambling establishments as well as sports and music venues.
