The era of extremely cheap car rentals in Mallorca appears to be over. Prices of just a few euros a day, offered by some providers before the coronavirus pandemic, are now rare. If the supply of hire cars on the island is indeed limited, this is likely to push prices even higher.
Statistics show a clear upward trend in recent years. According to the comparison platform Billiger-Mietwagen.de, the average daily price during the summer holidays in Mallorca was 23.02€ in 2019. This summer, it has risen to 41.97€, after being 39.70€ in 2024.
Frieder Bechtel, press spokesperson for Billiger-Mietwagen.de, attributes the increase to a shift in pricing policy across the island’s car rental sector. “We have left behind the sometimes absurdly low daily rates of the past,” he says. “Excessively low prices are no longer an issue.”
The change has had a positive impact on service quality. With more sustainable pricing from the start, rental companies face less pressure to generate extra income through questionable practices. As a result, customer complaints are already on the decline.
Supply shortages during the pandemic also played a role. Between 2021 and 2023, the island’s rental fleet was significantly smaller than in previous years, driving daily prices up. According to Billiger-Mietwagen.de, the average cost was 51.59€ in summer 2021 and exceeded 80€ in 2022.
