In Conversation with Nina Schweser: The Spirit Behind Yoga del Mar’s Spirit Festival

If you're new to yoga or spirituality, it's the perfect space to explore and discover what resonates with you

As Mallorca continues to grow as a global hub for wellness, the Yoga del Mar Spirit Festival stands out as one of the island’s most soulful and transformative gatherings. Blending yoga, music, healing, and conscious community, the festival returns this August for its third edition. I caught up with Nina Schweser, co-founder of Yoga del Mar in Portixol, to learn about the festival's roots, its evolving vision, and what makes it so powerfully unique.

How did the idea for the Spirit Festival first come about? Was there a particular moment or inspiration that sparked the vision?

The vision for the Spirit Festival came to me shortly after my colleague Yasmin and I opened the Yoga del Mar Studio in Portixol, four years ago. I felt this calling to bring people together in community, to create a space for connection - with your Self, with nature and one another. To offer practices, for people to explore methods that might open a door and that help them connect to their inner essence; to realize that there is no separation, that somehow we are all connected, through that field of consciousness. The Festival is like a playground for spirituality, to find inspiration, in a personal and family like atmosphere. This coming together in union, like one big family was the image that I saw clearly with my inner eyes.

What was your original intention behind creating the festival — and how has that evolved since its inception?

We’re now preparing for the third edition of the Spirit Festival, co-created with David Lurey, a musician, yoga teacher and event producer. Each year we choose a theme that serves as a red thread weaving all the elements together — yoga, meditation, sound healing, breathwork, ecstatic dance, concerts, workshops and wisdom talks.

This year’s theme is "NEW EARTH", and it sets the intention and energy for the entire event. Yet, the festival has its own Spirit, we’re simply preparing everything so that it can unfold. It’s more than a festival — it’s a movement. Each person becomes a part of it, helping to create an energetic frequency of love, healing, joy, and togetherness, with ripple effects that extend far beyond the weekend.

What makes Spirit Festival different from other wellness events on the island — or abroad?

People tell us that the Spirit Festival feels authentic, real, and grounded. There's always a bridge from the mat to real life. As David says, “It’s not all rainbows and unicorns.” We come together to meet ourselves as we are — including our shadows and the parts we usually hide. We bring light and kindness to those places, allowing transformation to unfold.

There are four event spaces offering a range of practices: from movement and sound journeys to breathwork and inner child healing. We host workshops like Family Constellation, Conscious Parenting, Soul Travel, Women's and Men's Circles, and more. And in the evenings, we celebrate life with live music and dance.

Unlike other large-scale events, we intentionally keep the festival personal and intimate with around 300–400 participants. Even if you come alone, you won’t feel alone. There’s no alcohol — just raw cacao, creating a natural high that comes from joy, love, and community.

Can you tell us about the role Yoga del Mar plays in organising and shaping the energy of the event?

At Yoga del Mar, we call our space a “home for body, mind and soul.” It’s more than a yoga studio — it’s a community hub. Many of our regulars are international residents, away from their families, and they find a sense of belonging here.

We offer yoga, meditation, cacao ceremonies, breathwork, somatic dance, sound healing, and constellation workshops — like a smaller version of the festival. The festival grew from the same vision of Union, planted like a seed, which is now blossoming into something much bigger. We often reflect on the phrase: “As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul.” – Hermes Trismegistus. It reminds us that real change begins within, and through that, we can impact the world.

This year’s festival includes yoga, music, dance, healing, and more. How do you curate such a diverse yet cohesive experience?

It may seem like a wide range of practices, but they all lead to the same place: awakening. Whether it’s through yoga, dance, sound, or workshops, each path guides us to the question: Who am I? By reconnecting with our true essence, we realise that we are all on this journey together — individually and collectively — as one consciousness.

You bring together an incredible variety of teachers and practitioners. How do you choose who to invite?

We’re lucky to already have a vibrant community through the studio — teachers, musicians, and artists based here on Mallorca. We also invite presenters from Ibiza, to strengthen the Balearic connection, and a few international guests known in the wider yoga world. But most of the people involved are part of our personal journey. Life brought us together, and the festival becomes a kind of reunion — each one brings their unique gifts, and together we co-create something powerful. Union makes magic.

What kind of experience can a first-time visitor expect? Is it suitable for beginners?

Absolutely! This festival is for everyone, not just yoga professionals. If you're new to yoga or spirituality, it's the perfect space to explore and discover what resonates with you.

You can come for the full four days to dive deep, or just enjoy a single day or evening concert. Many people come for the weekend, and we also offer concert-only tickets. No matter how long you stay, you’ll step into a space that feels like a portal — and you’ll leave with a smile in your heart.

Tell me a little about the venue. Why did you choose it, and how does nature play into the spirit of the festival?

The festival takes place at Only Summer Finca in Llubi, in the heart of the island. It’s a beautiful open-air, boho-chic finca with mountain views, a pool, and expansive natural surroundings.

We have four event spaces, plus areas for music, art and food markets, massage temple, kids zone, glamping, camping, and van parking. It offers both community and solitude — you can join the crowd or find your own quiet moment in nature.

What has surprised or moved you most about the impact the festival has had on the community?

What moves me most is witnessing the transformation that happens over the festival days — the joy, the tears, the deep connections. People show up courageously, peel back layers, and reconnect with their truth.

We’ve had participants say the festival changed their lives — gave them the strength to make bold changes, move to Mallorca, or form lasting friendships. The energy we create together doesn’t disappear — it lives on, and when we meet again, that spark is still there.

Looking ahead — what are your hopes or intentions for Spirit Festival in the future?

We want to keep going. David and I pour our love, time, and even personal finances into this project, all year round. Last year, we even had to cover some costs ourselves, but we never stopped believing.

We see this festival like a tree — rooted deeply in the earth of Mallorca, with branches reaching toward the sky. It's growing, and we hope it continues to blossom with the help of the amazing people involved: volunteers, presenters, musicians, builders, artists, and every person who buys a ticket.

Together, we are creating something that brings more light into the world — and that’s what truly matters.
