Viewpoint: The new Magalluf

“The future is looking bright for Magalluf with massive investment...”

|

MAGALLUF has been in the news for all the wrong reasons over the last month but there is good news on the horizon. Millions of euros of private investment are being pumped into the resort with new and up-graded hotels being planned along with leisure parks and other facilities. The only low point is that Mallorca Rocks will close at the end of the season after five successful years. Their hotels will be redeveloped by the BCM Group who will be announcing ambitious plans shortly. So for a resort which is at the moment in the headlines for the wrong reasons in the near future it could be in the headlines for all the right reasons and become one of the star resorts in Majorca. But obviously the hoteliers, who are planning all this investment are concerned at the incidents in Punta Ballena, the infamous strip in the heart of Magalluf. As you will read in today´s newspaper the Chairman of the Melia Hotel Group is calling for a big crackdown on Magalluf. He states (rightly) that the tourism which frequents Calle Punta Ballena is scaring away family holidaymakers who would contribute more to the local economy. I think you can safely say that 2014 will be a watershed year for Magalluf. Critics will say that it was the year when it hit rock bottom, supporters will say that it was the year when the future became clear with all this investment. So the days of Magalluf grabbing the headlines could be over and I thin we will all applaud that.
