The good old days!

“The demise of Winter tourism should be a major concern...”

|

ONE hundred flights a week from across Britain and scores of hotels open around the island. Now, this was a holiday programme operated by a major British tour firm to the island 15 years ago. Unfortunately this programme no longer exists. You would be mistaken if you thought that it was a Summer holiday programme. No, this was a Winter tourism programme to Majorca operated by Thomson Holidays. You see 15 years ago Majorca was an exceptionally popular Winter holiday destination; hotels were open and hundreds of jobs were safeguarded during the so-called low period. So I must ask the question; why was it scrapped and why couldn´t it be re-introduced again? The island still has 300 days of sunshine a year and it is still one of Britain´s most popular holiday destinations. So far I haven´t found anyone who can give me a explanation over the demise of Winter tourism to Majorca. Some have said that the Winter weather has got colder and that some hotels do not have central heating. These are all rather laughable excuses. My view is that someone decided that Majorca would no longer be a Winter-sun destination. The decision was probably taken in a boardroom many miles away from the island. In the Winter it would be the Caribbean or the Canary Islands and in the Summer, Majorca. A great pity. I am not a great supporter of calling for a return of the so-called ‘good old days’ but in this case I do believe that the past was better.
