ONE of the few successful things to come out of this year was the Thursday Night Fever extended shopping hours. It proved a success and the Majorcan Tourist Board has quite rightly choosen to reward this initiative with a prize at their annual Christmas dinner. Next summer shops could be open every night until late, which is great news. But what I don´t understand is why it only takes place during the summer? Surely, it would be a great idea to have extended shop opening hours over the festive period?
Can you imagine extended opening on a Friday night with some Christmas carols, the festive lights and some street entertainment? I am sure that even the most hard-pressed shopper would enjoy some festive cheer and even spend some pennies. But no. As usual there will be as about as much Christmas atmosphere around Palma as a cold day in Skegness with the economic recession just underlining how badly hit shopkeepers are this year. The same imagination which was shown last summer should be peated again for Christmas. Now is the time to take some action otherwise the Christmas period is going to pass the same way as the summer season in the resorts. Action this day, rather than wait and see should be the message.
