PRESIDENT Bush had a busy week meeting European leaders, in order Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey, President Sarkozy of France and CHancellor Merkel of Germany. He also found time to telephone President Musharraf of Pakistan to tell him that he should give up his army uniform and guarantee free parliamentary elections early in 2008. Meanwhile Pakistan's state of emergency continued with further arrests of political opponents and censorship of the media. Former Prime minister Benazir Bhutto said she would lead a protest march but was subjected to house arrest instead. Another state of emergency was declared in Georgia by President Saakashvili after several days of street protests against the lack of political and economic reform; however he agreed to bring forward elections by eight months. In America Rudy Giuliani, the leading Republican candidate for the 2008 presidential election, was endorsed by the influential Christian conservative.
