YOUR LETTERS

Dear Editor,

YOUR comments today (Friday) on the role of Majorca as an inexpensive holiday resort are perspicacious and apt during the credit crunch era that is engulfing the world. All the more surprising to read elsewhere in the Bulletin,on the same day, that the old discredited idea of a “luxury” Marina for Magalluf is being touted again. I remember its first appearance nearly 20 years ago, and pointed out then the folly of such a development that included destroying great swathes of “cheap” bars, restaurants, apartments etc. that would ensue, for the dubious attraction of hoity-toity yachties surveying the “natives” through binoculars as they dipped into their well-packed hampers. They, I'm sure, would not be looking for a nine euro menu ashore!

And, don't forget the cost of such a project. It ran into millions of pesetas when it was first envisaged. God knows how much it would cost now. Billions,(euros) I should imagine, for very little return.Let the marinas at Puerto Portals,Port Adriano etc. cater for the high flyers, and let Magalluf keep its feet on the ground and encourage the many who have always regarded the resort as cheap and cheerful, providing the service which you, Mr.Moore, sensibly, wish to see generally on the Island.
