IT is good news that the Anglo-German travel giant, TUI, have announced that they will be promoting Majorca as a Winter holiday destination through their worldwide network. However, it is a shame that the owner of Thomson Holidays and First Choice no longer operate a Winter programme to the island. At one stage Thomson Holidays brought a large number of tourists to the island during the Winter helping to keep hotels open across Majorca including Magalluf. But that was then. However, the big travel firms are rather being upstaged at the moment by the new-kid-on-the-block, Jet2, which is busy promoting the island as a cycling destination during the low season. I was looking at their website yesterday and it is quite an impressive programme mostly in the north of the island, which has become the training area for Team Sky, home to Tour de France winners, Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome. They are expected on the island shortly. Jet 2 is using a considerable number of hotels and has flights from March from a number of British airports. Cycling is certainly a niche market but if it helps keeping hotels open in Majorca during the Winter months, then it is more than welcome. Majorca needs all the help it can get as regards to Winter tourism and we appear to be on the right track at the moment. Who know thanks to Team Sky, Majorca could become a real international cycling destination during the Winter months. Now, that would be good.
