THE debate over the lack of winter flights continues to be a major talking point in the expatriate community and this weekend the number of flights to Britain will be dramatically reduced as the summer season comes to an end. British tour firms and airlines have come to the conclusion that Majorca is no longer a winter/sun destination. British tourists want sun and obviously during the winter months in Majorca this can´t be guaranteed. The airlines also say that they will be willing to fly to Majorca during the winter months as long as they have the backing of the local authorities. Backing in this case means cash, and the cash-strapped local authorities are not willing to invest a single euro in helping the airlines. So it is a no-win situation. The local authorities appear resigned to the fact that winter tourism is set to disappear in Majorca. What a nightmare situation. There is plenty to do in Majorca during the winter months it would only take a bit of imagination and a guide of what can be done could easily be compiled and made available to tourists. Over the last few months I have been campaigning in this space for more winter flights and so far my appeals have been well received but have fallen on deaf ears. But, there may be some good news. London is proving to be exceptionally popular with Majorcan tourists. Infact it is the top getaway destination for local residents. Perhaps, Majorcan tourists will save the day!
