Policing Magalluf

Why shouldn´t the Magalluf business community pay for some of the policing costs?

|

OBVIOUSLY, a major police crackdown is needed in Magalluf but who is going to pay for it? Calvia council´s coffers are limited and I sincerely doubt the hard-pressed rate-payers would like to see an increase in their taxes to pay for more police for Magalluf. As I said in this space yesterday we are probably talking scores of extra officers just to deal with the problem of prostitution, illegal street vendors and many of Magalluf´s other ills. So perhaps the Magalluf business community should pay their share as well? Football clubs pay for policing on match days so perhaps bars, restaurants, shops and hotels should help pay towards policing. If I was a resident of Calvia I wouldn´t be too impressed to see that the majority of police officers were on duty in Magalluf leaving the rest of Calvia, "unprotected." Also, I am told there are just two emergency ambulances on duty at night in Calvia and no prizes for guessing where they spend the majority of their time. The Calvia council has already announced extra funding next year for policing in Magalluf. Granted that the business community already pays high taxes but so do their counterparts in Palmanova, Paguera and Santa Ponsa but these resorts do not need special policing. So perhaps next time the Calvia council sit down with the Magalluf business community they could float the proposal of a business tax. It is probably one of the few ways to bring Magalluf under control but it will cost.
