Dear Sir,
I REGULARLY read in your paper that the tourism authorities are seeking ways to extend the tourist season and give holidaymakers more than just sun, sea and sand.
I am a regular visitor to Puerto Pollenca in the north of the island and read of all the evening activities that take place in Palma throughout the year, such as concerts, walks and this year the Thursday night late night opening of shops and museums. It is reported that the Thursday Night late night event is likely to be repeated again next year. The shame is that these evening events are only accessible by public transport by anyone living in the Palma district. Anyone living elsewhere, like myself, find that the transport system in the evening does not allow you to have an evening out in the Capital. We can visit Palma during the day but the last bus returning to Puerto Pollensa leaves at 8.30pm and to Alcudia at 9pm. So an evening out in Palma is not an option without a car or a very expensive taxi ride back home.
So would it not be a good idea to have a late night bus back from Palma to the various main coastal resorts outside of the Palma district (say 11pm), then in summer people could have their day on the beach and then in the cool of the evening still be able to spend time seeing what Palma has to offer. If the bus companies are not sure of how successful this would be they could trial it by adding it to their timetable one or two evenings a week, or run it to coincide with any regular event in Palma such as the Thursday Night late night opening.
Now we have the new motorways on the island the journey time to Puerto Pollensa is less than an hour. Here in Puerto Pollensa and Alcudia, especially now we know that we are not likely to get the train line in the near future, other alternatives need to be improved upon. Yours faithfully
Margaret Scott
