OVER the last few weeks, readers have been telling me of a major reduction in winter flights to the island from Britain. Unfortunately, they were right! Yesterday, I investigated the flight situation for next month and even the no-frills airlines have dramatically reduced their programmes.
The only good news this year is that Monarch have increased the frequency of their services. But this is a single ray of sunshine in a very cloudy situation. If there are no flights we can forget winter tourism. If you can´t get here then the winter is going to be pretty bleak for all those who live from tourism. Until recently you were spoilt for choice, now you can count the number of flights on a single hand. This is a very sad state of affairs not only for tourists and residents but also for holiday home owners.
The local authorities should try and convince the airlines to introduce a proper service over the winter period. It is vital. I know that talks have taken place between the local authorities and British Airways but the so-called no-frills carriers should also be included. Perhaps, Spanish or even German airlines could look at the possibility of linking Majorca with Britain. With no flights, the local authorities can seriously forget winter tourism for another year.
