ANOTHER day, another political crisis in the Balearics, it is becoming as frequent as rain in September! Once again the Majorcan Unionist Party appear to have thrown their toys out of the pram and have broken away from the coalition which governs the Council of Majorca.
This same coalition is also in power on the local government and the city council, but allegedly the fall out from the Council of Majorca has not hit the other two institutions so far. The Majorcan Unionists appear to be the rather rogue element within the coalition government and the last thing that the Balearics needs at the moment is another political crisis. Balearic leader Francesc Antich must show the necessary courage and call an early election. It is quite clear that his coalition is not working. There has just been one crisis too many. Antich must let the voters decide who they want to govern these islands in one of the worst economic storms ever known. It is no good trying to stay in power at all costs. The opinion polls show that Antich´s socialists could do well in an early election and it would probably win the poll. However, who knows but now is the time for leadership and no more political infighting. Strong and not divided government is needed.
