STRIKING OUT

By Jason Moore

NEXT Wednesday a general strike is taking place in Spain and the unions want to bring the country to a standstill to protest at new labour laws which have been introduced. The labour laws make hiring and firing much easier and the legislation has already been passed which makes the strike rather pointless. However, yesterday the fact that Spain will be coming to a standstill was reported in the British media.

Shock, horror. You can´t keep a general strike quiet especially if the unions are planning to stop all international flights and it might be an idea if the Spanish authorities started warning tourists than they face disruption. At the end of the day it is not their fault that Spain is going on strike. At the moment I haven´t seen any warning or even guidelines about what is going to happen on Wednesday but in general strikes of the past the tourist industry has been widely hit. Of course the British media are going to report the story, it is their job. You can´t blame the media for giving the country negative publicity, it is not their fault. Labour disputes are not nice, and a general strike is the last thing that Spain needs at the moment. The Spanish authorities should start drawing up contingency plans in an effort to limit the affects of the nationwide walkout.
