HAS Gordon Brown run out of ideas? His latest chestnut is the offer to reduce Britain´s fleet of nuclear-armed submarines from four to three. What an absolutely fantastic idea which will grab all the headlines and hopefully detract from the fact that Britain is still in deep recession while the rest of the world appears to be pulling out. Britain at the moment has four Vanguard Trident armed nuclear submarines.
At any one time there is one on patrol, while the other three are in dock at their base in Scotland. Each submarine is armed with enough missiles to destroy a country so really Britain only needs one or two at the most. But the spin-merchants in Number 10 obviously thought that this was an excellent idea especially as Brown appears to go from one crisis to another. Now logically speaking the money which is saved from decommissioning one of these submarines should be spent on buying proper equipment for the troops on the frontline in Afghanistan, but no mention has been made about the money. This is just another example of a failing government which is trying to grab the headlines in a desperate attempt to win votes. While the Tories and the Lib Dems talk economy Brown talks nuclear weapons. Is that all he has left to talk about....!
