...for George Soros, whose bids against the pound sterling in 1992 led to Britain's withdrawal from the Exchange Mechanism, for his donation of US$100 million to Human Rights Watch to enable it to expand its work in monitoring human rights abuses around the world. The organisation employs 300 people at its office in New York but Mr Soros said he would like it to be based elsewhere to emphasize its international character. Soros was born in Hungary but escaped the Nazi invasion by travelling to London in 1939.
