YOU may think it's all over, but it's not. The general election, I mean. The Queen may have made her Speech but the result is not yet final. The Yorkshire constituency of Thirsk and Malton votes today in a contest delayed because of the death of the UKIP candidate after the election had been called. In April the Conservative and Liberal Democrat candidates were at each other's throats but now that they are partners in the government coalition -- they are still at each other's throats, according to reports from the field, with accusations about expenses claims being aired. There are also candidates for Labour, UKIP and even a genuine old-fashioned Liberal standing but the only point of interest is how the love affair in Whitehall between their leaders will affect voting between Conservative Anne McIntosh and Lib Dem Howard Keal.
McIntosh had a big majority when she won the old Vale of York constituency in 2005 and will probably win today in this very large, mainly rural area.
There may be the making of an Ealing comedy in all this: a general election results in a dead heat, so a delayed constituency vote will decide the outcome. But the main candidates are both blithering idiots and the seat goes to a total outsider who knows nothing about politics but is installed at No 10 and becomes a rather successful prime minister. I like it!
