The gloves are off

I have a feeling that this local election campaign is going to turn rather nasty. On Wednesday at the last parliamentary sitting before the big day in May the Balearic government and the opposition clashed over who owns what. Balearic leader, Jaume Matas, came under fire for buying a five million euro home in the centre of Palma while the socialist Balearic MP who had criticised Matas, was asked if it was true that he owned three homes, a yacht and a BMW! All rather school play-ground stuff but it is a clear sign that both the Partido Popular and the PSOE are prepared to use their big guns if necessary. I hope that the election campaign is a good clean fight with fairplay very much in everyone's mind. But I sincerely doubt it. The politicial parties are turning up the heat because they suspect that the election is wide-open. I'm not so sure. Matas will undoubtedly win but will he secure a majority? The battle for votes has already started and I am afraid to report that the controversial tourist tax is back on the agenda. The left-wing coalition known as the bloc wants to re-introduce the tax which charged tourists a euro a day. If Matas fails to get an overall majority we could be facing another coalition Balearic government.

However, with almost two months left to go it is going to be a most interesting election campaign.
