Dear sir,
It Was interesting to read the editor's editorial in today's (9th April 2002) edition about the media being wrong-footed about the death of the Queen Mum.
I honestly don't think it was just the media but the Government also, especially Mr Blair. The nation has seen him gad about pretending to be President and listened to the media about the Queen Mother and the Royals and decided enough was enough and united behind the Royals as a mark of respect and reaction back to the Government and its anti Royal friends. There are more people in the United Kingdom pro the monarchy than anti it, and it's about time the moaning minnies realised that! The Queen Mum encompassed an age past, and the Royals are now learning what she learnt back in 1936, rent is what you pay for the rest of your life.
They have gone walkabout and have thanked people for being there, and they have learnt the mistakes from the death of Diana. We couldn't have expected the out pouring of grief as there was for Diana, hers was a sudden death and her boys where cheated of growing up with their mother so early on in their lives. The Queen Mum's death was expected, and like many families who have elderly relatives, we expect that death shall come, but some day and far away, but it's still a shock to us all. The Queen Mum represented everyone's granny and that's what the nation wanted to say thanks for. Maybe the spin doctors and whoever else doubted the nation's grief, should stop spinning and stand still for a bit and talk to those who are in the know, the people. Maybe also they should stop believing their own press releases! The nation likes its Royals, it gives us something to read about in Hello, it lets us love/ hate them in equal measures and most of all it makes us what we are - British.
Now no one seems to want our business in the winter
Dear Sir,
I have been coming to Majorca (a beautiful Island - and my favourite place) since 1969 but now so many hotels prefer to close down in the Winter and prefer not to work. I was in Santa Ponsa and many other resorts in November 2001. I was staying in Palma, but when I was travelling around the Island I couldn't help thinking about the past years when I used to spend many Christmas and New Year times and other months of the winter on the island. Now no one seems to want our business in the winter - such a shame when a beautiful island shuts down and people prefer not to work! Perhaps I'm just an old sentimentalist and lover of Majorcan people. Mind you, when you look at the prices in English brochures, it's not surprising that people are not going to the island.
Jesus was a Jew and the Romans murdered Christ
Dear Sir,
I should like to comment on Father Robert Ellis's article last week. He did not mention that Jesus was Jew. He was a young Rabbi. Also - it was not the Jews who murdered Christ but the Romans.
Yours,
