Calvia has begun publishing real-time occupancy data for some of its busiest beaches in a move aimed at modernising tourism services and challenging perceptions of overcrowding across the resort municipality.

The new system allows residents and tourists to check how busy beaches are at any given moment, including the number of people on the sand and in the water, as well as the percentage of total capacity being used. The information, updated every 10 minutes, currently covers six beaches in Peguera, Palmanova, Magalluf and Santa Ponsa.

The initiative forms part of Calvia’s Smart Tourist Destination project, which uses digital monitoring technology to improve visitor management and public services. In the coming weeks, the platform is also expected to provide live updates on water conditions, including sea temperature, pH levels and water clarity, once the installation of monitoring buoys has been completed.

Data collected during the summer of 2025 appears to undermine claims that Calvia’s beaches suffer from severe overcrowding during peak season. According to the figures, no beach exceeded 50% occupancy at any point last summer. Son Maties beach recorded the highest level, reaching 49.8% capacity on 24 August, while Magalluf beach peaked at 27.58% occupancy on 30 July.

Local authorities say the project will help them better manage resources and anticipate pressure points throughout the tourist season. At the same time, Calvia hopes to retain its 15 Q for Tourist Quality flags this year, reinforcing its position as one of Spain’s leading coastal destinations for beach standards and visitor services.
