On Tuesday, the Lifeguards Union announced a definitive severing of relations with Palma Town Hall. This latest development in what has been an ongoing conflict between the lifeguards and the town hall followed a meeting with the environment department. The union stated that the situation had reached breaking point after years of unfulfilled promises. It has called a "total strike" for June 24, the day of Sant Joan.
The lifeguards claim that at Tuesday's meeting the environment councillor, Llorenç Bauzà, made promises regarding improvements "in order to get rid of us". The representatives didn't accept these and says it will focus protest action on issues that, in their view, reflect the true state of the lifeguard service on Palma's beaches and directly affect public safety.
Among the main deficiencies denounced is the apparent lack of basic infrastructure. As of today, areas such as Ciudad Jardín and Cala Estancia lack first-aid stations. The situation is said to be worse in Playa de Palma, the largest resort area in Mallorca, where there are no toilets or showers. Buoys are inadequate or non-existent in some areas, posing a direct risk to swimmers and boat users.
They are also highlighting security issues on beaches. Lifeguards respond daily to thefts from beachgoers, but they themselves can be targets for theft. For example, a service bicycle has been stolen.
The union believes these problems are the consequence of poor management by the councillor. "Governing isn't just about having a presence on social media; it's about guaranteeing safety, basic services, and decent conditions for both workers and citizens."
A demonstration outside the town hall building in Plaça Cort is scheduled for May 28. The lifeguards are inviting the public to take part in this. On June 24 there will be a total strike, the union stressing that the beaches will be without lifeguard service. "Let's be clear: safety is not an expense, it's a basic necessity." Shortcomings affect residents and tourists and seriously damage the image and safety of Palma's beaches.
