This week’s cinema highlight is Hamnet (2025), directed by Chloé Zhao, a restrained and deeply moving period drama in which Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal portray Agnes and William Shakespeare as they confront grief after the death of their young son. The film has received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Leading Actress. Also new is the futuristic thriller Mercy (2026), with Chris Pratt racing to prove his innocence before an A.I. judge, while Tim Burton’s modern classic Edward Scissorhands (1990) returns to the big screen.

Still showing are Kristen Stewart’s uncompromising drama The Chronology of Water, domestic thriller The Housemaid, Jim Jarmusch’s family drama Father Mother Sister Brother, James Cameron’s epic sequel Avatar: Fire and Ash, which has received two Academy Award nominations, and animated favourite Zootropolis 2.

Coming soon is Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights (2026), a dark and passionate reimagining of Emily Brontë’s classic, opening on February 13.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)
