Twice a year, hundreds of people flock to Palma Cathedral to witness the 'Vuit de la Seu', the Cathedral's Eight.
On Martinmas (Saint Martin) and Candlemas (February 2) - equal numbers of days before and after the winter solstice - the first rays of sunlight pass through the main rose window of the Cathedral and their reflection is projected perfectly aligned beneath the opposite rose window, creating the shape of a luminous figure eight.
The Cathedral has dubbed this the 'Festival of Light'. The event is very much dependent on the weather. If the skies are cloudy, the effect is obviously diminished. Free to the public, they come in their droves with cameras ready to capture the moment.
While this is a phenomenon that has existed for centuries, it never used to attract much attention. An initiative of the Balearic Mathematics Society in the mid-1990s raised awareness, which has kept on growing ever since.
