The IB Ballooning Festival Mallorca launched its second edition this Wednesday in Capdepera, marking the beginning of an international hot air balloon gathering that will continue until Sunday, 26th October. The opening ceremony featured a spectacular display of hot air balloons that drew approximately 2,000 spectators, according to event organisers, setting a new attendance record for the festival.

This year's event has attracted 25 balloons from around the world, representing a 25% increase from last year's participation. Notable additions include Belgian pilot Patrick Simooms's ice cream cone-shaped balloon and the striking 'Scarlett the Parrot', a vibrant red parrot-shaped creation. Festival director Jordi Aracil highlighted the artistic balloon as one of the evening's most remarkable features, whilst the burners' illumination captivated both locals and tourists alike, with many young visitors enjoying tethered rides.

International participation

The festival boasts a strong international presence, with Belgian and French pilots forming the largest contingent. Teams from Germany, Holland, Poland, Lithuania, England, Switzerland, Latvia, and the United States are also participating. Spanish representation includes pilots Jordi Aracil from Mallorca, Josep Maria Lladó from Catalonia, and Andrés Tapias from Segovia. 2008 World Champion François Messines is also set to take part in upcoming festival events.

Weather considerations

Thursday morning's scheduled flight was cancelled due to a yellow weather warning for high winds, with afternoon activities pending weather developments. The event is organised by Illes Balears Ballooning with support from Capdepera town hall and Cap Vermell Grand Hotel.
