Mallorca travellers met by drilling and construction chaos at Palma Airport

The €560 million redevelopment of Palma Airport is now in its final phase

Ongoing works at Palma Airport mean a noisier-than-normal arrival experience for travellers this summer.

Palma Airport has unveiled its newest attraction this summer: interpretive drilling. Travellers arriving in Mallorca are no longer greeted by the sound of rolling suitcases or distant holiday excitement, but by what can only be described as a construction crew remixing heavy metal live in the terminal.

The €560 million redevelopment of Palma Airport is now in its final phase, promising sleek VIP lounges, rooftop terraces, natural light and a smoother passenger experience. For now, however, the main feature appears to be a jackhammer solo echoing through departures.

Airport operator AENA says the works will create a more sustainable, comfortable and modern hub, complete with LED lighting, faster security processing and improved boarding flow. Passengers currently navigating the maze of temporary walls and mystery corridors are simply focused on locating Gate C without accidentally entering a live building site.

To be fair, progress is visible everywhere. New cafés are appearing closer to entrances, passport technology has been upgraded, and the airport’s future Valldemossa VIP Lounge will offer Tramuntana views, showers and a private terrace.

The works are due to finish by the end of the year. Until then, Palma remains the only airport in Europe where noise-cancelling headphones feel less like a luxury and more like part of the security requirements.
