Balearics has handled nearly 16 million international air passengers so far this year: UK is Spain's main market

The Balearics handled 15.87 million international air passengers between January and November, representing a year-on-year increase of 2.4%. Last November, specifically, 246,223 international air passengers arrived on the islands, representing an increase of 3.8% compared to the same month in 2024. Palma airport handled 12.1 million passengers between January and November (+2.3%) and 231,629 in November alone (+3.4%).

Of the total number of tourists arriving by plane in the Balearics in November, 174,451 (+2.6%) did so on low-cost airlines. In the first 11 months of the year, 11 million (+4.4%) did so. Traditional airlines carried 71,772 passengers (+6.9%) in November and 4.79 million (-1.9%) between January and November. In general terms, Spain received 104 million international passengers in the first eleven months of the year, an increase of 5.8% compared to the same period in 2024. Passengers arriving from international airports exceeded 7.3 million in November, 7.9% more than in the same month a year ago.

During November, there was an increase in international passenger arrivals from all the main source markets, with notable increases of over 10% from Ireland, Poland, Switzerland and Italy. Market diversification also saw a notable increase this month, of 10.4%, with the Persian Gulf countries, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar standing out in terms of volume of arrivals; from Asia, China, South Korea and Japan stand out; among the Latin American countries, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina also recorded increases.

In terms of the main source markets, in November the United Kingdom accounted for around 1.3 million international passengers and generated 18.2% of the total flow of arrivals to Spain, with a year-on-year increase of 3.3%. The Canary Islands was the main recipient of arrivals, accounting for 38.7% of the total, and recorded a slight decrease of 0.5%. This month also saw increases in arrivals in Andalusia, the Valencian Community and the Community of Madrid, with more than 10,000 additional passengers compared to the same month last year.

900,000 passengers flew from Germany in November, accounting for 12.2% of the total; this represents a year-on-year increase of 3.4%. The Canary Islands was the main destination, with a 36.8% share of arrivals, although it saw a moderate decline of around 3,500 fewer passengers. The Valencian Community and Andalusia benefited from more than 10,000 additional passengers this month.

Italy accounted for 11.1% of passenger traffic in November (814,216), recording a notable year-on-year growth of 12.2%. Catalonia and the Community of Madrid were the regions that benefited most, together receiving 60.2% of total arrivals, with respective year-on-year increases of 6.7% and 6.2%. The other regions saw notable increases, with the Valencian Community standing out with a rise of +52.3%. France accounted for 6.9% of total passengers, showing a year-on-year increase of 6.4%. Madrid accounted for 33.4% of total arrivals, and Catalonia for 26.7% of the flow, with both recording increases. Andalusia benefited the most with a notable increase of 17.3%.

Finally, passengers arriving from the Netherlands accounted for 4.7% of the total and experienced an increase of 8.7%. These passengers mainly travelled to the Valencian Community and Andalusia, accounting for 42% of arrivals. All regions except the Basque Country experienced positive growth, with Valencia and the Principality of Asturias standing out with increases of over 15%.
