Flights at Palma Airport are experiencing delays due to bad weather. Airport operator Aena said conditions are expected to worsen on Sunday evening as a cold front reaches the island. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued orange warnings for the Serra de Tramuntana, the north and northeast from 10pm local time.
Forecasters say some areas could see as much as 40 litres of rain per square metre in an hour, with thunderstorms bringing gusts of up to 90 km/h and the possibility of hail.
Weather alerts will be extended overnight into Monday. Orange warnings will remain in force for the south, Tramuntana, north and northeast, while yellow warnings will cover the rest of the island until 8am on 22 September.
Aena has advised passengers due to travel to check their flights, with adverse weather also affecting airports in Barcelona and Menorca. The operator stressed that delays in Palma are unrelated to Saturday’s cyberattacks on airports in Belgium, Germany and the UK.
Despite the disruption, passenger traffic at Palma was described as “very high”, with the weekend marking the end of the summer season.
