UGT and Menzies Aviation have reached a preliminary agreement, resulting in the possible suspension of the planned ground staff strike at Spanish airports this weekend. The move comes after three days of intensive negotiations between the union and the company.

José Manuel Peces, UGT’s Secretary for Trade Union Action and Collective Bargaining in the Balearics, warned that the agreement does not yet constitute the formal cancellation of the strike. He emphasised that the industrial action remains officially called until the terms are formally confirmed in writing.

The key points of the preliminary deal focus on improvements in leave, working hours, staff rotations, and holiday entitlements. Peces said these details must be “put in black and white” before any official announcement can be made.

The union also recalled previous disputes with Menzies, in which agreements reached verbally were not implemented in practice. This history has made the union cautious about declaring the strike over too early.

At present, there have been no reports of flight delays or cancellations linked to the strike. Meanwhile, the Azul Handling strike, involving another group of ground staff and part of Ryanair, remains in effect, with stoppages scheduled at various times throughout the day.
