Handling workers employed by Menzies went on strike on Saturday, adding to the strike by Azul Handling workers that had started on Friday.
For the most part, operations at Palma Airport were not unduly affected. There were some delays, such as a British Airways flight to Edinburgh, while a British Airways flight to Heathrow was cancelled.
José Manuel Peces of the UGT union expressed his "satisfaction" with the response to the strike call in the islands, despite the "abusive" minimum service requirements imposed by the companies. This is despite the fact that "the companies are imposing overtime on workers" during the strike, but "disguising it" in order to maintain operations.
The strikes will continue on Sunday, the Azul workers threatening to strike every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the end of the year.
Further strike action by Menzies workers is expected next weekend and the weekend after.
