The Aena airports authority reports that records for Palma Son Sant Joan Airport will be set this weekend. From Friday to Sunday, there will be 2,627 flights (arriving and departing) carrying some 472,000 passengers. These will be record numbers for a May weekend and are figures not dissimilar to those of high summer.
The high level of activity is partly due to school half term in England and Wales. There are also Whitsun holidays in some of Germany's Länder. Once these holidays finish, school summer holidays in Sweden begin in the middle of June and in the German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen from June 23.
Airlines are reporting higher-than-expected activity, which will continue throughout June.
